The Good Ole Boy Network
As I turned towards Rebecca, she had her head buried into her cubicle pretending to work hard and working hard to pretend she was busy.
She had the cubicle right next to Evan’s big cube. Evan was our boss but not everyone’s boss.
“So are you excited for the big dinner tonight.” I asked her. I smiled as I said it. Everything I said to everyone on my team was said with a smile because I was new and I did all that I could at every moment to make a good impression.
“Yeah, I’m going with Alex.” She said. “Do you remember what time it was again?” As she said it, I knew she knew but I answered anyway.
“We leave at 5:30 I think? I know Evan said we didn’t have to really leave till six but before hand some people are getting drinks so.”
“Cool. So how do you like it so far? Busy second week huh?” She barely looked up.
“Yeah, it’s cool. I’m glad to be on the phones and selling. It’s not really that tough but it is a lot of dials.”
“Yeah tell me about it.” She said. “Well, this dinner thing is nice. A lobster dinner-you came in at the right time.” She all of a sudden didn’t seem so busy anymore. She had looked over to Evan’s cube and noticed he was gone and nowhere in sight, so she relaxed a little. “Yeah, it’s Evan’s first real big team event. And I know a lobster dinner for the fifteen of us has got to be expensive. Then again, Evan’s making Hunter pay for it. I know it.” She said is quietly as though her theory could rock the foundation of our ten story building. |
